Learn How to Reset a Check Engine Light
If your check engine light stays on even after you have resolved the issue, you’ll want to learn how to reset a check engine light. Strathmore-area drivers will find that the process is really quite simple and can be performed in your own driveway. This guide from the experts in the Service Centre at Capital Chevrolet Buick GMC will walk you through the steps for resetting the check engine light on your car, truck, or SUV.
If There Is a Problem, Take Care of It ASAP
First of all, you need to make sure that you have taken care of whatever it is that triggered the check engine light. Often the problem can be a minor one, such as not having the gas cap securely fastened. Whatever caused the light to come on needs to be attended to before you reset, as even small problems can become major issues if they are not resolved. If you are unable to locate the initial problem, we strongly recommend that you schedule service with us as soon as possible. Our GM Certified technicians can quickly identify the issue and get you safely back on Okotoks-area roads.
Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable
If you are certain that you have taken care of the problem that triggered the check engine light, you can manually reset it. Again, if you are uncomfortable with performing this task, the service team at Capital Chevrolet Buick GMC can take care of it for you. The following steps describe how to reset a check engine light.
- Turn off the ignition and put on safety glasses and gloves.
- Locate the negative terminal on your car battery. It will most often have a black cap and a negative (–) symbol. The positive cap is red and will have a positive (+) symbol.
- Loosen the nut on the negative terminal with a wrench and pull the negative connector from the battery. Keep it to the side for 30 – 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the negative cable and tighten it with your wrench.
That’s all you need to do. If you see that the check engine light stays on even after you’ve disconnected/reconnected the battery, bring your vehicle to our Service Centre. Please note that disconnecting your battery may also require you to reset the infotainment system in your vehicle.
Check Your Gas Cap
As previously mentioned, one of the most common reasons that the check engine light turns on is a loose or cracked gas cap. Usually, removing the gas cap and reseating it, making sure that it is properly secured, will cause the light to turn off. If the engine light stays on after you perform this check, following the steps above to disconnect the battery should reset it. If you run into any problems, our service professionals will be happy to assist you.
