Are All Electric Car Chargers the Same for Every EV?

Yes, all EVs have the same standard plug for Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 charging. These are the three most common forms of charging in Okotoks and all over Canada and North America. The only exception is the Tesla Supercharger with its exclusive charging plug.

What Are the Different Types of Electric Car Chargers & Charging Types?

There are three different types of electric car chargers in and around Airdrie, all of which help you get the most out of EV ownership. Keep reading to see more information regarding these charging levels as we continue to answer, “Are all electric car chargers the same?” It’s very easy to distinguish among these charging types.

Level 1 Charging

Level 1 chargers add 5 to 8 km of range per hour to your EV’s battery. Level 1 charging is the slowest type of charger, and it’s perfect for topping off your EV battery or fully charging a PHEV. Level 1 charging is recommended for commuters with shorter drives rather than long-distance drives between charges.

If your EV range is 480 km, it could take up to three or four days to fully charge the EV with Level 1 charging if the battery is nearly empty. For a PHEV with 40 km of all-electric range, you could charge the PHEV battery in about 5 to 8 hours, which is perfect for reducing your refuelling costs on short drives in your Strathmore neighbourhood.

Level 2 Charging

Level 2 charging adds 19 to 125 km of range to your EV per hour. Level 2 is fantastic for running errands around town, commuting to work, and travelling to your favourite weekend getaways. Have a professional electrician install a special Level 2 charging box in your garage to prepare your home for an EV. Yes, you’ll have to spend money upfront for this installation in many cases. But the fuel savings and convenience are well worth it!

You could fully charge your EV overnight while you sleep in 6 to 10 hours. You’ll also find Level 2 chargers at public charging stations, such as in the parking lots of retailers, banks, and apartment complexes. These public chargers are becoming more and more widespread around the country, so you’ll have the freedom to drive almost anywhere.

Level 3 Charging

Level 3 charging is the quickest with a charging speed of 5 to 32 km of range per minute. Level 3 chargers utilize a direct current with a much higher voltage. Level 3 chargers are only found at special public charging stations around town and on well-traveled routes and highways. Public chargers cost money, but they are still cheaper than gasoline. Level 3 chargers are perfect for jaunts all around the country, and they are well-placed in larger urban areas and cities.
